NCUIM Department in a Nutshell
The Information Management department was established in the seventy-fourth academic year of NCU with the main purpose being developing professionals with skills in information systems development required by local companies; and to contribute to the long-term development of information management. During 1991, in view of the gradual development of society and the increasing demand for information technology applications, a master's degree was annexed to our programs. Then, in 1994, a PhD class was added in. Compared with other information management departments in Taiwan, this department is characterized by the cultivation of management skills, making sure its members are capable of managing enterprise IT applications, enabling students to have the ability to run and lead an enterprise towards success while coping with globalization.
The educational objectives of the department are focused on a "scientific basis" and "humanistic conservation". Therefore, in terms of educational content, in addition to cultivating students' scientific and managerial expertise, we also focus on stimulating student’s creativity; serving and caring attitude, teamwork and cooperation habits, among others; ensuring that students are able to catch up with the fierce and rapid pace of technological change by fully integrating environmental factors such as technology, organization, processes, and manpower, and this way reach a level of expertise on leading organizational innovation and enhancing organizational efficiency and competitiveness. In the master's program, the department mainly focuses on preparing students for the future of information society, using the integration of relevant theoretical frameworks, a practical application of information technology, analytical methods and business management knowledge to help companies identify business environments and opportunities, as well as conducting strategic planning. In order to effectively assist enterprises to solve business management problems and create competitive advantages for them, the department covers the key and most important areas of management, decision making support and information technology. Among the main fields taught in the Master’s program we have: At first, the management field, that focuses on important areas of knowledge about all aspects of business management, and how companies can effectively use information technology to solve organizational problems caused upon the introduction of information technology for the first time. Relevant topics include corporate strategy planning, the economic value of information systems, global information systems, information and industry competition, electronic/mobile commerce, and corporate re-engineering. Second, the decision making support field, which focuses on the analysis of enterprises’ data and the computerization of decision-making models, such as enterprise simulation, group decision support systems, fuzzy models, neural network systems, artificial intelligence, and data mining. Third, we have the application of information technology, this field focuses on the management of relevant information technology to solve the issues that technology planning and development design bring along when introducing IT. The topics include information system development, database design, network management, data mining, artificial intelligence, IoT, cloud computing, information system security, multimedia information processing, etc. As for the Ph.D. program, first above, we focus on forming excellent management asset professors, so that they have the ability to engage in information management education and research, and ensure that they are able to explore important issues related to information management in light of the practical environment of local and foreign companies, as well as to explore the causes of issues beneath the field, other than that we prepare our Ph.D. student s to identify and go through the impact of these issues on individuals and organizations. Finally, abstract it into a theoretical concept, complete an empirical research, and come up with more significant insights. We also do many IT-related researches such as software engineering, information security, IoT, data mining, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, mobile computing and FinTech. Remarkable achievements: Since the establishment of the department, its main strength has been the recruitment of well qualified professors and the establishment of the Institute. Currently, there are 22 full-time instructors, including 13 full-time professors, 3 associate professors and 6 assistant professors, all of whom have doctoral degrees. The master's program was established in 1991. The doctoral class began enrolling students in the country in 1983. This program has a vast practical experience in several fields such as information management, information technology and decision making, all of which meet the needs of different students’ aptitudes. Also, in a near future, the department will hire more experts in information technology and management to provide students with the best learning environment. The department is well balanced when it comes to education and research. The teachers are in average young and they are often sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, etc., and are engaged in various research related projects that have to do with information management. They have and continue to publish papers in local and foreign journals and often organize and participate in relevant academic conferences.
Since its establishment in 1974, the National Central University's Department of Qualifications has been working hard to develop excellent IT applications as well as indispensable management, and planning abilities. It has also reviewed the outstanding performance of the department in all aspects as well as its rapid growth rate. In addition to the hard work and dedication of all teachers and students, the achievements reflect the desire and demand of the current social, industrial and commercial industries for excellent performance. Therefore, while the future world is gradually moving toward information society, information management will play a key role in the development of society in general. Relatively, we must face more important challenges and take over big responsibilities. Currently, the department has established a good foundation in terms of scaling, teachers’ performance, curriculum, research, equipment and industry-university cooperation. Future developments are oriented towards meeting the needs of society and enterprises, focusing particularly in the following key points: 1. Improve the quality of education The purpose of management education is to cultivate management talents with a long-term vision, sound personality and professional ability. In the face of teamwork and corporate ethics, today, the point of teaching is to train students' correct values and practices in addition to professional knowledge. Attitude is also a positive goal of our department's education. 2. Expand research results At present, the department has successfully assembled a large number of teachers in different areas of expertise, and carried out integrated research projects in the form of research groups to integrate technology and knowledge in different areas of expertise. In the future, we hope to gradually establish a special research room to unite the research strength and research results of the teachers, and strive for large-scale research projects to implement academic results in practical applications. 3. Implement service related ideals The department currently maintains a good and close cooperative relation with the government public departments, corporate research institutions, policy councils, Taipei Computer Association, Information Management Institute and Chinese Enterprise Resource Planning Association, and actively participates in various promotional and educational events. In the future, we will continue promoting this model in order to leverage our knowledge resources strengths and expand our influence and contribution to society. 4. Endurance for the future In the face of the advent of the information age, NCU Information Management is also about to moving towards a new future. In addition to cherishing the hard-won achievements and glory of the past, we also hope that NCU Information Management will adhere to its ideals and roots in the future. In the information age, we expect to be leading trends and helping the country's society enter a new era.
